In March 2024 Philly Family Voices joined us for a discussion on “How to be more active and involved in our children’s lives.”
GEL Tips from the Session
Guardians should apologize when they are wrong. They should be a model of accountability. Many guardians skip this part.
Guardians should involve themselves in school events, committees, and community meetings that their children view as important. Show your kids that you are invested.
Guardians should practice active listening. Guardians should ask their children about their day. Guardians don’t always need to give input and advice. Sometimes it is okay to just listen. You can also consider the following questions: “Do you want feedback? Do you want our advice? Do you want a listening ear?”
If there are multiple children in the family, guardians should carve out time to have individual check-ins with individual children. Ensure that you have one on one time with each of them.”
